Mini Bitcoin Miner: Bitaxe, NerdMiner and Avalon Home Miners

A mini Bitcoin miner is a small, quiet ASIC miner you can run on your desk. Compare the Bitaxe Gamma, NerdQaxe++, Avalon Nano 3S, Avalon Mini 3 and Avalon Q by price, hashrate, power and real daily income.

Income is before electricity and uses the current network difficulty and Bitcoin price. Net/day uses $0.15 per kWh, a typical home tariff; UK and German home power is often more expensive. Mining income changes daily and is not guaranteed.

What is a mini Bitcoin miner?

It is a real SHA-256 ASIC miner, just much smaller than a data-center machine like the Antminer S21. Most use one to a few mining chips, run from a small power adapter and are quiet enough for a desk or living room. They connect to your Wi-Fi and mine to a pool or solo, using your own Bitcoin address.

Bitaxe Gamma: the open-source solo miner

The Bitaxe Gamma is an open-source miner built around a single Bitmain BM1370 chip. It makes about 1.2 TH/s on roughly 17 W and is set up from a web page in your browser (AxeOS): connect power, join its Wi-Fi hotspot, enter your home Wi-Fi, a pool address and your Bitcoin address. It is the cheapest way to learn how mining works.

NerdMiner and NerdQaxe++

The original NerdMiner is a tiny hobby board with very little hashrate. The NerdQaxe++ is a far more powerful open-source design with four chips, about 4.8 TH/s on around 60 W, for people who want more lottery tickets per day without the noise of a full-size miner.

Avalon Nano 3S, Avalon Mini 3 and Avalon Q

Canaan’s home range is built to sit in a room. The Avalon Nano 3S (about 6 TH/s, 140 W) also works as a small heater. The Avalon Mini 3 (37.5 TH/s, 800 W) and the Avalon Q (90 TH/s, 1,674 W) are the most powerful home miners, quiet enough for a house and able to earn real pool income where electricity is cheap.

Solo mining: how the lottery works

In pool mining you earn a steady, tiny share of every block the pool finds. In solo mining you only earn if your own miner finds a block, but then you keep the whole block reward. With a mini miner the chance per day is extremely small, so think of solo mining as a lottery ticket, not income. Run it for fun, for learning and to support the decentralisation of Bitcoin.

Can a mini Bitcoin miner make money?

Small miners like the Bitaxe earn cents per day in a pool, so they rarely pay back their price. Larger home miners such as the Avalon Q can make a profit with cheap electricity or when you use the heat to warm your home in winter. If you want income rather than a hobby, look at our full-size ASIC miners with hosting on cheap industrial power.

Mini miners for Dogecoin, Litecoin and other coins

Scrypt home miners mine Dogecoin and Litecoin together through merge mining, and earn more per day than a Bitaxe.

Mini Bitcoin miner FAQ

What is the best mini Bitcoin miner?

For learning and solo mining on a budget, the Bitaxe Gamma is the most popular choice: about 1.2 TH/s on roughly 17 W. The NerdQaxe++ gives about 4.8 TH/s, the Avalon Nano 3S about 6 TH/s and doubles as a heater, and the Avalon Q (90 TH/s) is the most powerful quiet home miner we sell.

Is a Bitaxe worth it?

As a learning tool and a solo-mining lottery ticket, yes: it is cheap, silent and uses about as much power as a phone charger. As an income source, no. Its pool income is only a few cents a day, so buy it for the experience and the small chance of a block, not for profit.

Can a Bitaxe or NerdMiner find a Bitcoin block?

Yes, but the chance is extremely small. In solo mining the miner that finds a block keeps the whole reward, and a handful of home solo miners have done it. With about 1 TH/s against a network of hundreds of millions of TH/s, expect to wait far longer than a lifetime on average.

How much electricity does a mini Bitcoin miner use?

A Bitaxe Gamma uses about 17 W and a NerdQaxe++ about 60 W, which costs a few cents per day. Larger home miners such as the Avalon Mini 3 (about 800 W) or Avalon Q (about 1,674 W) use as much as a space heater.

Do you ship mini miners to the UK, EU and Asia?

Yes. We ship worldwide, including the UK, Germany and the rest of the EU, Hong Kong and Singapore. Shipping is quoted after you order, and every miner has a 6-year MinerNexus warranty.
