Electricity: why most Australians host their miners

Australian home power costs about 30–33 cents per kWh on average in 2026, and 35–45 cents in South Australia. A modern air-cooled miner such as the Antminer S21 Pro uses 3,675 W, or about 88 kWh a day. At 31 cents that is around A$27 of power a day, roughly twice what the miner earns. That is why most Australian buyers send large ASIC miners to a hosting site with industrial power at about US$0.06 per kWh, where the same machine makes a profit.

Running a miner at home can make sense with your own solar during the day, or with a small, quiet miner. See our mini Bitcoin miner guide for home models.

Is Bitcoin mining legal in Australia?

Yes. Owning and running a Bitcoin miner is legal in Australia. The practical limits are your power supply, noise and heat: a full-size ASIC miner is as loud as a vacuum cleaner and needs a dedicated circuit, so check your wiring with a licensed electrician before you plug one in.

GST, import and tax

  • Imports into Australia attract 10% GST. For orders over A$1,000 it is collected at the border by the Australian Border Force before delivery, together with any duty and charges.
  • The Australian Taxation Office treats mining as either a hobby or a business depending on how you run it. In a business, the coins you mine are ordinary income when you receive them; in either case, selling coins later can trigger capital gains tax.
  • This is general information, not tax advice. Speak to an Australian accountant about your situation.
