Electricity by province: where mining pays

Electricity prices in Canada vary more than almost anywhere. Quebec and Manitoba have some of the lowest home rates in North America, while Alberta, Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island have been among the most expensive provinces, and the territories cost more still. For a household using 1,000 kWh a month, bills range from roughly C$83 to C$375 depending on where you live.

A modern miner such as the Antminer S21 Pro uses about 88 kWh a day. In a low-cost province it can make a profit at home; in an expensive one, most buyers host it on industrial power at about US$0.06 per kWh. Use the calculator on each miner page with your own rate.

Is Bitcoin mining legal in Canada?

Yes. Owning and running a Bitcoin miner is legal in Canada. Some utilities, for example in Quebec and British Columbia, limit or refuse new large-scale crypto-mining connections, so check with your utility before running more than a few machines. A full-size ASIC miner is loud and needs a dedicated circuit; ask a licensed electrician.

GST/HST, import and tax

  • Imported miners are subject to GST or HST, and in some provinces provincial sales tax, collected by the Canada Border Services Agency or the courier before delivery.
  • The Canada Revenue Agency treats mining as a business or a hobby depending on how you run it. Business mining income is taxable, and selling coins can create a capital gain or business income.
  • This is general information, not tax advice. Speak to a Canadian accountant about your situation.
